  David Gauger II, a native of Rolling Meadows, Ill., is coordinator of instrumental instruction at Moody Bible Institute. In addition to his duties with the band, he teaches music technology, instrumental conducting and applied trumpet, coaches small ensembles, and is involved in recording many musicians on campus.

  ​Since late 1999, David Gauger has played extra and substitute trumpet regularly with the Chicago Symphony (CSO) both at Symphony Center and Ravinia, the summer home of the CSO. He has performed with the CSO under such conductors as Riccardo Muti, Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Pierre Boulez, Christoph Eschenbach, Mstislav Rostropovitch, Lorin Maazel, Charles Dutoit, Pinchas Zukerman, David Zinman, Kent Nagano and Itzhak Perlman. He has toured with the Chicago Symphony to the Far East, Europe twice, and to Carnegie Hall in New York five times. His major trumpet teachers have included Vincent Cichowicz, Charles Geyer, and William Scarlett, all of the CSO. He recently completed his DMA at Northwestern University in trumpet performance.

  From 1983 to 1994, he was principal trumpet of the Tulsa Philharmonic and from 1980 to 1983 he was principal trumpet of the Hong Kong Philharmonic, touring with that group to Singapore, Bangkok, and Osaka. He was a member of the Grand Teton Music Festival orchestra during the summers of 1983 to 1990, and has played extra trumpet with the Oklahoma Symphony and substitute trumpet with the S. Louis Symphony on several occasions. He is currently assistant principal trumpet of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, performing with this group about a dozen times a year and plays regularly with the Chicago Philharmonic as well.

  His doctoral dissertation was a cross-discipline project on the effect of congregational volume on one's encouragement to sing. Research for the project included the development of a ten-channel recording and playback system that tapped into his knowledge of music technology and surround audio. Corporate worship has always been part of his professional life in that he was a Minister of Music at Calvary Memorial Church in Oak Park, IL for two years, part of worship teams in several churches playing trumpet and auxiliary percussion, and has planned and led worship regularly at others.
