  • Professional / Personal Interests:

Dr. Jang was born in South Korea, and has deep roots in the eastern culture and music. He composes in the spirit and image of Korea, especially on han (bitterness), a Korean emotion. He considers han a blessing through which people can know God and come closer to God. He reflects on han as a transfigured image of Christianity and continually explores ways to express han in various musical contexts and styles.

Dr. Jang taught at Manhattan School of Music and Boston University while working on degrees at those institutions, and was a faculty member at Phillips Exeter Academy before coming to MBI. His music is widely performed and commissioned in Europe, Asia, Australia and the USA, including CMS conferences/concerts, Avignon Music Festival (France), Fontainebleau Music Festival (France), Boston University Tanglewood Music Institute (Massachusetts), Parkway Concert Orchestra (Massachusetts), and Korean Broadcasting System (KBS). He received "The Best Contemporary Music Award" from Fontainebleau Music Festival in France, and was invited to Dai-sm International Contemporary Music Festival (Korea), Daegu International Contemporary Music Festival and KACF in Boston as a guest composer. He also gave lectures at "Compositions in the 21st Century" at Trinity College (Ireland), "The Searching Church Music Festival" (Korea), Far Eastern Broadcasting Company (Korea) and Department of Education of South Korea (Daegu Branch).

As a conductor, Dr. Jang conducted Bacau Philharmonic Orchestra in Romania, and was conductor/artistic director of Exeter Symphonia, Boston Korean Chorus, Little OL Korea Arts Foundation and churches in Boston and New York.

Dr. Jang has a passion for cooking, and cooking for his family and friends is one of his blessings and joys.
