Despite Pandemic, Moody Grads Ready for Ministry

Although the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted plans for Commencement this year, it didn’t stop Moody from celebrating and encouraging the class of 2020 during a special virtual chapel for all campuses. And it won’t stop the graduates from stepping into their ministry calling, even during these uncertain times.

Moody’s president, Dr. Mark Jobe, gave a charge to the students. “I believe you’ve been prepared better than 95 percent of the people your age—theologically, missionally, and practically. You’ve been invested and poured into. I believe you are ready—more ready than you know—to face the challenges that are ahead of us.”

Dr. Jobe reminded the students of the account of Joseph, who at age 17 experienced a major crisis: betrayed and sold into slavery. But along the way he learned skills and discovered giftings that would enable him to save his family and influence the nation. “Some of you think this is the worst season of your life,” Dr. Jobe said. “But I believe God has a purpose and a plan. I want to encourage you to look for what God is doing in the midst of this.”

Nancy Hastings, executive director of the Moody Alumni Association, welcomed graduates into the family of more than 45,000 alumni now scattered around the globe. Writing in the tribute program, she asked the graduates to stay connected through Moody Alumni & Friends magazine and other outlets, to remember Moody in prayer and through financial support, and to represent Christ well. “May you go out and be salt and light in this dark world!” she said.

During the tribute chapel, several professors and leaders exhorted the students graduating from Moody Bible Institute and Moody Theological Seminary. The graduates then gave voice to what they value most about Moody, including their biblical teaching and lasting friendships.

Lynn Quan, who earned her MA in Ministry Leadership, said, “I’ve enjoyed my time sitting at the feet of some incredible professors, learning alongside some very godly men and women.”

Liam Clinch, who completed a BA in TESOL, said, “Experiences that stick out to me over my time at Moody are playing four years on the men’s soccer team, studying abroad in Israel, meeting my soon-to-be wife, and gaining a deeper and more real understanding of what Jesus did for my life.”
