Admission Requirements

General Entrance Requirements

Students admitted to Moody Theological Seminary are chosen on the basis of spirituality, ministry zeal, character references and scholastic ability. Applicants should possess qualities that indicate usefulness in the Lord's service that will make them desirable members of the Institute family.

For these reasons, candidates for admission must give evidence of acceptance of the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior, a good Christian character and a sincere desire to win others to Him. Active membership in an evangelical Protestant church and agreement with the Institute's doctrinal statement are also required.

All applicants to Moody Theological Seminary are evaluated for admission on the basis of the following four criteria:

  • academic record of bachelor’s degree work
  • personal ministry history
  • character references (does not apply to CMHC applicants)
  • statement of purpose for applying to the program
  • faculty group interview (only required for CMHC applicants)

Bachelor's Degree

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required. Each student must provide transcripts verifying a 2.50 grade point average (on a scale of 4.0).

Clinical Mental Health Counseling Applicants

Clinical Mental Health Counseling Applicants are NOT required to supply a paper pastoral or character reference form. Applicants are required to complete a group interview with CMHC faculty. Once you have started the online application, please e-mail for the available interview dates. Video conference options will be available for the interview dates solely for applicants who live 70 miles or more from campus.

International Students

All international applicants must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language with a high degree of proficiency. Academic success at Moody will depend on the student’s level of fluency in English. Therefore, all applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and have the scores submitted directly to the Office of Admissions. A minimum TOEFL score of 575 on paper-based tests, 233 on computer-based tests, or 85 on internet-based tests, or a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is required. Applicants who do not meet a minimum English proficiency requirement will not be admitted.
